Activity

La Laguna, Tenerife, Canary Islands (Spain)
December 7th–11th, 2010.

Introduction:

The 5th International Young Researchers Workshop on Geometry, Mechanics and Control will be the fifth in a series of workshops that have previously taken place in Madrid (20062007), Barcelona (2008) and Ghent (2009). Its goal is to bring together young researchers working in geometric mechanics and control theory and to offer a platform to present the results of their research to an international audience. The main idea of this conference is to offer 4 courses of 3 hours which serve as an introduction to different topics related to geometric structures in mechanics and control theory. The courses will be at a PhD level, so the young researchers would, at the end of the Workshop, access to the recent literature on the corresponding topics. Along with the courses, there will be short talks (30 minutes) by the participants willing to present their results. Moreover, there will be a poster session including a 5-minute presentation of each poster.

Attendance is, of course, open to anyone, but in particular young researchers (PhD-students, recent PhD's) are allowed to deliver a talk or present a poster at this meeting.

The following is a non-exhaustive list of topics that can be covered during the workshop:

  • Geometry: (multi)symplectic geometry, Poisson and Jacobi manifolds, Lie groups, Lie algebroids and Lie groupoids.
  • Mechanics: Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems, non-holonomic mechanics, calculus of variations, mechanical systems with symmetry, conservation laws and reduction, classical field theories, geometric integration of mechanical systems, geometric quantization.
  • Control: optimal control theory, control of mechanical systems, geometric control.

This activity is included in the Semester Geometric Methods for Optimal Control.

Important dates:

  • Registration and room reservation: no later than November 10, 2010
  • Communication/poster Submittal: no later than September 30, 2010
  • IMPORTANT REMARK: You should note that the week of the workshop is a vacation week in Spain. Therefore, you should buy your plane tickets in advance, so the price does not increase too much.

Courses:

  • Henrique Bursztyn (IMPA, Brazil) — Dirac structures
  • Dirac structures were introduced by Courant and Weinstein around 20 years ago, motivated by the study of mechanical systems with constraints. A key ingredient in the theory of Dirac structures is the so-called Courant bracket, which gives a unified way to view many known integrability conditions in geometry. These lectures will provide an introduction to Dirac structures, with basic definitions, properties and examples. If time permits, we will discuss recent developments and applications of the theory.

  • Marco Castrillón (Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain) — Reduction in Jet Bundle Theory
  • This mini course will explore the basic definitions on variational calculus and symmetries on bundles. The reduction scheme for Field Theories will be constructed for principal bundles and the geometric interpretation of the equations will be explained. Moreover, the Hamilton Pontryagin principle in jet bundles will be introduced. Some examples will illustrate the theory.

  • Taeyoung Lee (Florida Institute of Technology, USA) — Discrete Geometric Mechanics
  • The first section of this course will explore computational geometric methods for numerical integration, optimal control, and feedback control of mechanical systems. The structure preserving properties of discrete geometric mechanics and control will be illustrated by several complex engineering systems, such as tethered spacecraft and a quadrotror UAV. During the remaining sections, discrete variational principle on the special orthogonal group will be introduced, with applications to the attitude dynamics of a rigid body.

How to get here:

Tenerife Norte Airport (TFN) is located 4.5km from the city center. We provide a travel agency who can arrange your plane tickets, if you wish. The agency is "El Corte Inglés" which e-mail is grupostfnatviajeseci [dot] es and the contact person is Virginia.

The following airlines fly to TFN from different countries:

You can take a taxi or a TITSA bus to get from the airport to the city center. A taxi from Airport Tenerife Norte to Hotel Nivaria is about 10 minutes.

There exists another airport in Tenerife Island, Tenerife Sur Airport (TFS), which is 63km from the city of La Laguna. Therefore, we highly recommend flying to Tenerife Norte.
